A crisis of execution

In a recent survey of 400 global CEOs, execution excellence topped the list of some 80 challenges facing corporate leaders that also included innovation, geopolitical instability, and top-line growth. The ability to simply 'get things done' is getting harder than ever in the Age of Complexity.

We don’t have to look far to find examples of this 'crisis of execution':

  • Flower delivery service 1-800-FLOWERS fails to deliver thousands of Valentine’s Day orders due to weather, triggering a brand backlash
  • Widespread procedure and control breakdowns at Wells Fargo result in over $1 billion in fines and affect millions of customers
  • A financial services company so crippled by complexity that the CEO told us they could “no longer execute”

Why executing in a complex system is different

Unfortunately, there is a vicious cycle at work: in response to poor execution, companies are adding programs, tools, and people, which frequently increase complexity and further impair execution. Many traditional solutions, such as Lean Six Sigma, were designed for more 'linear' systems. But executing in a complex system requires different approaches, because events:

  • Are too complex to anticipate
  • Develop so quickly there is not time to address them
  • Occur too infrequently to understand
